Ada is a young girl with a clubfoot. She is forced to stay in one room for her entire life by her abusive mother. Her mother physically and mentally abuses Ada because of her clubfoot. She's too embarrassed about her child's twisted foot, so she won't let Ada go outside. Ada watches her brother Jamie play outside everyday through the window in her room. When World War II comes around, the government decides to send children out of the country. Their new family is just Susan Smith. Young Susan Smith does not think she is fit to care of the children.
